Topical Authority: The Content Strategy That Wins in 2026

By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026

Google no longer rewards keyword density or sheer content volume. It rewards depth. Topical authority — the comprehensive, authoritative coverage of a subject — is the modern content signal that determines which sites rank at the top and which AI engines cite most frequently.

What Topical Authority Means

Topical authority is Google's and AI engines' assessment of how comprehensively and expertly your website covers a subject. A site that covers every meaningful aspect of "local SEO" — how it works, the ranking factors, the strategy, the tools, the pitfalls — signals deeper expertise than a site with one page on the topic. That deeper expertise signal translates to better rankings across all related queries and more frequent AI citations.

The Topic Cluster Model

The topic cluster model is the standard architecture for building topical authority. It works like this: a hub page (also called a pillar page) covers a core topic broadly and comprehensively. Cluster pages (also called spoke pages) cover specific subtopics in depth and link back to the hub. The hub and spokes link to each other, creating a tight network of related content that signals comprehensive expertise.

How to Build Topical Authority

Building topical authority follows a systematic process:

  1. Choose the core topics (2-5) where you want to build authority
  2. Map every meaningful subtopic under each core topic
  3. Audit your existing content to identify what's already covered
  4. Create a content calendar to fill the gaps systematically
  5. Interlink all related content with descriptive anchor text
  6. Refresh existing content to improve depth and accuracy
