What Makes a Good Backlink in 2026?

By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026

Backlinks remain one of Google's most powerful ranking signals — but the quality gap between a good backlink and a worthless one has never been wider. One high-quality backlink from a trusted, relevant publication can move rankings more than 100 links from low-authority directories.

The Four Dimensions of Link Quality

1. Authority

A link from a site with high domain authority passes more ranking power. Domain authority is built through the site's own backlink profile, age, and content quality. A link from the New York Times or a major industry publication is worth far more than a link from a random blog with no traffic.

2. Relevance

A link from a topically relevant site signals to Google that your site is trusted within your industry. An SEO agency getting a link from a marketing trade publication is more valuable than a link from an unrelated business directory. Relevance has become increasingly important as Google's link evaluation has grown more sophisticated.

3. Editorial Context

Links embedded in editorial content — within the body of an article, with contextual anchor text — are more valuable than links in sidebars, footers, or link directories. Google values links that are placed because a real editor chose to link to you, not links that exist for the sake of linking.

4. Traffic

A link from a page with real traffic sends referral visits — and also signals to Google that the page is a trusted resource. Links from pages with no organic traffic are worth significantly less than links from well-trafficked pages.

What to Avoid

Link farms, PBNs (private blog networks), comment spam, directory submissions to low-quality sites, and reciprocal link schemes are not just useless — they can actively harm your rankings. Google's link spam algorithms have grown significantly more sophisticated. A toxic backlink profile can suppress your rankings across your entire domain.
