City Pages vs. Service Area Pages: Which Strategy is Right for You?
By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026
Two distinct content strategies exist for capturing local searches across multiple cities — city pages and service area pages. Both work, but they serve different situations and require different executions. Understanding which fits your business is critical before you build them out.
City Pages
A city page is a dedicated landing page for a specific city that covers all the services you offer in that city. URL structure: /seo-services-cincinnati, /plumber-cincinnati, etc. City pages work best when:
- You serve a small number of major markets (3-10 cities)
- Each city is a significant revenue source worth a full page
- You have enough unique, city-specific content to fill the page
- You can build local links pointing to the city page
Service Area Pages
A service area page is organized around a specific service and targets multiple locations for that service. URL structure: /roofing-cincinnati, /roofing-dayton, /roofing-columbus. Service area pages work best when:
- You offer multiple distinct services across multiple cities
- You need to capture service + location keyword combinations specifically
- Your service territory is large (10+ cities)
- You can differentiate the content by location
The Decision Framework
For most local service businesses with 1-2 core services and 5-10 service cities: use city pages. For businesses with 3+ distinct services and 10+ service cities: use the service area page structure. When in doubt, start with fewer, higher-quality pages and expand based on performance data.
