How Businesses Appear in AI Search Results

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude recommends a business, it's not random. AI language models use a specific set of signals to evaluate which businesses are authoritative, trustworthy, and relevant to a user's query. Understanding these signals is the foundation of any effective AEO strategy.

Signal 1: Training Data Presence

AI models like ChatGPT are trained on massive datasets scraped from the web. Businesses with more authoritative web presence — more pages, more mentions across credible sites, more structured information — are more likely to be included in that training data with positive associations. This is why building a comprehensive, well-structured web presence is the foundation of AEO.

Signal 2: Real-Time Citation Sources

AI engines like Perplexity that perform real-time web searches evaluate sources they find and cite based on authority, relevance, and trustworthiness. Your site needs strong technical SEO, authoritative backlinks, and structured data to be treated as a credible source in real-time retrieval. A site that Google doesn't trust is unlikely to be cited by Perplexity either.

Signal 3: Entity Recognition

AI systems think in entities — specific, named things with defined attributes. Your business needs to be recognized as an entity: a specific company that provides specific services in specific locations. This requires consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data across directories, a Google Knowledge Panel, structured data on your website, and mentions across credible, topic-relevant sources.

Signal 4: Structured Content

AI systems extract information from web pages more easily when that content is structured — headers that organize information logically, FAQ sections that directly answer common questions, schema markup that labels what each piece of content is. Businesses that structure their content for extraction are more likely to be cited.
