How to Structure Content for AI Answers
By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026
AI systems don't read content the same way humans do. They scan for structure, extract key information, and evaluate whether your page directly answers the question at hand. Structuring your content for AI extraction significantly increases your chances of being cited.
The Direct Answer Opening
The most important structural principle for AEO: answer the question directly in the first paragraph. AI systems are looking for content that gets to the point. If your page takes three paragraphs of preamble before answering a question, it's less likely to be extracted. Open with the clear, concise answer — then provide depth and context in the following sections.
Use Descriptive Headers
H2 and H3 headers serve as navigation signals for both humans and AI. Use headers that are themselves questions or clear declarative statements that signal exactly what the section covers. "How Local SEO Works" is a good header. "Overview" is not. AI systems use header structure to understand the organization and scope of your content.
FAQ Sections
FAQ sections are the single most AI-friendly content format you can implement. They present questions and concise answers in a format that AI systems are specifically designed to extract. Every service page and major resource page should include an FAQ section that addresses the most common questions your potential customers ask. Pair this with FAQ schema markup.
Lists and Structured Data
Bulleted and numbered lists are highly extractable formats for AI systems. When listing steps, factors, or options, use a structured list rather than a paragraph. Combined with the appropriate schema markup (HowTo, ItemList, etc.), structured lists significantly improve your chances of being cited in AI-generated answers.
