Schema Markup for Service Businesses: A Practical Guide
By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026
Schema markup is structured data that tells search engines (and AI systems) exactly what your content is. For service businesses, the right schema implementation doesn't just improve Google rich results — it significantly improves your chances of being cited by AI search engines.
The Most Important Schema Types for Service Businesses
LocalBusiness (or subtype)
The most important schema for local service businesses. Use the most specific subtype available (Attorney, Plumber, Electrician, etc.) and include your name, address, phone, hours, services, and geographic area.
Service
Define each service you offer as a schema entity with a name, description, and areaServed. This helps AI engines understand the specific services your business provides.
FAQ
Applied to any page with visible FAQ content. This is one of the most impactful schema types for AI citations — FAQ content is exactly what AI systems extract to answer user questions.
Article
Applied to all blog posts and editorial content. Include headline, author, datePublished, and publisher information to establish content provenance.
BreadcrumbList
Applied to interior pages to signal page hierarchy. Helps both Google and AI systems understand your site structure.
Review / AggregateRating
If you display customer reviews on your site, mark them up with Review schema to potentially earn rich result star ratings in Google.
Implementation: JSON-LD
Always implement schema as JSON-LD in a script tag in your page's head — not as microdata in your HTML. JSON-LD is Google's preferred format and is far easier to maintain. Use Google's Rich Results Test to validate your implementation and Google Search Console to monitor for schema errors.
