How to Build an SEO Strategy That Actually Works
By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026
Most businesses don't fail at SEO because of bad tactics. They fail because they're executing tactics without a strategy. Blog posts without a keyword theme. On-page changes without a content architecture. Backlinks without a target page priority. The result is a collection of disconnected activities that produces traffic without revenue.
Step 1: Define Your Business Objectives
Before you do any keyword research, you need to know what winning looks like for your business. Are you trying to generate inbound leads? Drive e-commerce revenue? Build brand authority in a competitive category? Your SEO strategy should be designed backward from this objective — not from a list of keywords someone found in a tool.
Step 2: Understand Your Audience's Search Behavior
Map every stage of your customer's buying journey and identify the questions they're asking at each stage. This isn't just about keyword volume — it's about intent. A search for "what is SEO" has completely different intent than "SEO agency Cincinnati." Your strategy needs content at every stage:
Step 3: Conduct Competitive Intelligence
Reverse-engineer what your top 3-5 competitors are doing to rank. Look at their content structure, their backlink profiles, their local presence, and their AI citation frequency. This reveals the gaps — the keywords they're ranking for that you aren't, the content types they're producing that you haven't, and the authority signals they've built that you lack. These gaps define your opportunity.
Step 4: Build Your Content Architecture
A content architecture (or topic cluster model) organizes your content into hubs and spokes. A hub page covers a core topic comprehensively. Spoke pages cover specific subtopics and link back to the hub. This structure signals deep topical expertise to Google and makes it easier for AI engines to understand your authority on a subject.
Step 5: Prioritize by Impact
Not all SEO work is equal. Technical fixes that unblock indexation can move rankings overnight. An optimized service page can generate leads immediately. A new blog post might take months to rank. Your 90-day roadmap should be sequenced by impact — fixing what's broken first, then building what's missing, then expanding what's working.
