SEO Prioritization: How to Focus on What Moves the Needle

By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026

The hardest part of SEO isn't knowing what to do — it's knowing what to do first. Every business has a limited budget and limited time. Getting the prioritization wrong means spending six months on work that produces minimal results while the high-impact opportunities go untouched.

The SEO Priority Matrix

Evaluate every SEO action on two dimensions: business impact and implementation effort. Actions that fall in the high-impact, low-effort quadrant are your immediate priorities. These include fixing technical errors that block indexation, optimizing pages that already rank on page two, and building out underperforming service pages that target high-intent keywords.

Where Most Businesses Get It Wrong

Most businesses prioritize based on what's most visible, not what's most impactful. They spend months writing blog posts when their service pages need fundamental optimization. They build links to pages that have technical issues preventing Google from indexing them. They pursue vanity keywords when their core commercial keywords are sitting on page two with minimal optimization needed to hit page one.

A Practical Prioritization Framework

Before starting any SEO work, run through this checklist in order:

  1. Fix technical blockers (crawl errors, indexation issues, broken redirects)
  2. Optimize pages ranking in positions 4-20 for high-value keywords
  3. Improve conversion rate on existing high-traffic pages
  4. Create content for identified gaps in your cluster
  5. Build links to priority pages
  6. Expand into new keyword areas
