Internal Linking for SEO: How to Build a Link Architecture That Works

By Scott Sutter · Easty Marketing Group · June 2026

Internal links are the most underutilized SEO tactic in most businesses' playbook. Unlike backlinks, you have complete control over them — and a well-designed internal linking architecture can significantly improve your rankings without earning a single external link.

How Internal Links Work

Internal links serve two purposes in SEO: they pass "link equity" (authority) from one page to another, and they help Googlebot discover and understand the structure of your site. A page with many internal links pointing to it receives more authority from your domain. A page that's not linked to from anywhere — an orphan page — receives little authority and may not be crawled consistently.

The Hub-and-Spoke Internal Linking Model

The hub-and-spoke model is the most effective internal linking architecture for service businesses. Hub pages (your main service and industry pages) receive links from multiple spoke pages (blog posts, supporting service pages, location pages). This concentrates authority on your highest-priority pages. Every spoke should link back to its hub, and the hub should link out to its most important spokes.

Anchor Text Strategy

Anchor text — the clickable text of a link — is a strong relevance signal for Google. Use descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text that tells Google what the linked page is about. "Click here" and "learn more" waste anchor text value. "Local SEO for law firms" and "Cincinnati SEO services" pass relevance signals to the destination pages. Vary your anchor text naturally — exact-match anchor text overuse can look manipulative.

Internal Linking for AI Citations

Internal linking also helps AI systems understand your content's topical relationships. When your blog post about "how local SEO works" links to your "local SEO services" page and your "Google Business Profile optimization" page, AI engines see a connected knowledge structure — which strengthens the topical authority signals that drive AI citations.
